USATF & AAU You're On Athletic, Summer Team.

You’re On Athletic Track & Field Summer Team

Age Range for You’re On Athletic team members.
Our club’s primary focus is going to be on kids in grades 9-12 and some freshmen in college who still make the USATF and AAU age limit.  We are also going to be taking 8th grade kids that REALLY want to spend time improving and who REALLY want to run during the summer.  Many summer club teams take kids of all ages.  But for many reasons, too many to list here, we’re not trying to field a large team filled with pre-middle school kids. There are NUMEROUS teams in the state who do cater to the younger age groups and I highly recommend The Ann Arbor Track Club if you are looking for that.

What regional and national meets can we compete in? USATF & AAU.

All summer meets that we will run in will be either sanctioned by the USATF (U.S.A. Track & Field) or The AAU (Amateur Athletic Union).  You will need to get both a USATF and an AAU membership Card BEFORE you start practice or you are entered into a meet.…Do this right now, DON"T WAIT!
You will need both of these cards to compete in meets AND having your AAU card also assures the schools or city owned tracks we rent from that you are insured and will not file suit against them if you are hurt on their track.  The cards assures this insurance coverage for ALL parties involved, you, the rented track facility and You’re On Athletic Development. You can sign up online at:
www.aausports.org Go to the tab on the top page on the top left that says, “Join AAU” The club code you will enter is: miatcdxkbo  If they ask, our club name is You’re On Athletic Development Your cost will be $16.

To sign up for your USATF membership card, go to http://www.usatf.org/ if you have trouble finding the membership site, then go to: https://www.usatf.org/membership/application/index.asp and this will take you directly to the site.  I am pretty sure the entry fee is $20.00.  Please note our club number is: 1009  and is now on the USATF.org website. Type in the above number for the club.

All summer meets that we will run in will be either sanctioned by the USATF (U.S.A. Track & Field) or The AAU (Amateur Athletic Union)

How much does it cost to be on the You’re On Athletic team?
*$80.00 (9-12) ($50 4th-8th grade)

Other costs:
Hotel costs are paid by the athletes, as well as scheduled by their parents. In instances when people can share rides or athletes ride to meets with coaches, gas costs can be shared.  Coaches will enter all athletes and a bill will be given BEFORE each meet. (usually $6-$20 per event) Other expenses would be your AAU and USATF membership cards and must be paid by the athlete BEFORE entry and BEFORE they are on the team. (see left column)

Coaches responsibilities
If you have an athlete younger than 8th grade, please come to the meets to watch your child perform.  Watching younger kids when parents choose to "drop kids off" at meets is a safety issue.

At bigger meets like regionals and national meets, the coaches would love to be able to stay the whole week to watch the kids compete.  Please realize this is not monetarily possible because we all have "day jobs". At these five day meets, coaches should not be expected to skip an entire week of work in order to be at each and every team member's national or regional championships event. Please note that at You’re On Athletic that our coaching job is DONE and ACCOMPLISHED at the practices.  There should NOT be an expectation that we will stay the entire week at a hotel to coach each and every athlete while at a meet. Many of the larger meets run for a 4-7 day period and staying the entire week at these meets would represent an exorbitant cost that would have to be passed on to parents and would be reflected in our cost per athlete fees.  Therefore, it is important for parents to realize our plan in practice is to make your son or daughter fully prepared and self-sufficient at a meet. It
would cost the parents, $2-3,000 to put three coaches up for a week for these week-long national meets.  Most parents
DO NOT  want those kind of costs for a summer track club.  It will be your responsibility then to get your sons and daughters to their scheduled track events at these multi-day meets.

There will be times when there WILL be a coach, either myself (Gary) Mark Gardner, Gordy McIntosh, or Carl Myler at a meet for more than one day... when that occurs, we will do ALL we can to stay to observe and assist one of the team members, but please don’t expect it is required we are there.

Other Expenses
You’re On Athletic Development (the coaching business, not the track club) has a pricing list that goes pretty much like this: If you have never worked with us before, the first time you work with us and you want help in your specialty whether it is pole vault, block starts, running advice etc. , it cost you $125.00 for  4 hours of our time.  95% of the kids that have told us they will be on our team have already gone through this necessary training and have paid this fee and all they would owe to be on the team would be th $80.00 which covers our coaching time for the entire summer.  For (older kids who have not gone through this training, we will give you the regular $125.00 training session for a discounted rate of $90.00. (in addition to the $65.00 summer team fee) For this $90.00 you will get 4 hours of training instruction in your specialty.

The Summer team fee of $80.00 covers the coaching costs for the entire staff of four coaches (three are more full time (gary, mark, gordy), one are part time…Carl M.)  By the end of the summer the $80 in fees will basically cover our gas to and from practice from our homes. We want to keep the fees low in order to build a team in the next three years that has a real elite presence that will be noticed by collegiate recruiters as a team to watch when looking for future college scholarship athletes.

One last thing about elite athletes and coaching.  When it comes to elite athletes, the ones that do go to the national championships, these athletes will at times be getting additional coaching. This year, we will have 1-3 athletes who are going to be competing on that level. There will not always be equity in the amount of time we spend with the elite athlete versus an athlete of lesser skill. (on an occasional dayWhoever the elite athletes are, he or she has earned the extra attention. Please don’t be put out by this.  I can tell you right now, we have freshmen in high school who are on the team I KNOW will be on this same level and when their time comes, they too will get this extra attention. (Simply because competing on that level requires it.)

How long does the season run?
First, each summer is different when running USATF and AAU meets, driven in LARGE part by the location of the national meet and regional meet locations.  A few years ago for instance, the national AAU meet was held right here in Ypsilanti, Michigan.  That year, it was a given that anybody who had a remote chance of going to nationals, entered the state meet, the regional qualifying meet AND the national meet. When it is affordable to go to the regionals or national meet, everybody trains toward that goal and attends all three meets.

When and where are practices?
Practice locations and times will be announced by June 1, 2010 and will be somewhere in the Dearborn, MI area.

What larger meets will we be training towards ?

We will run the Michigan AAU and the USATF state qualifier meets for the regional championships. Locations to be announced for the 2011 season

Jim Bibbs Invitational (to be announced)

Dearborn Divine Child Summer meets (dates to come)

We'll need volunteer timers and officials to help run off track the meet in Manchester, Michigan for children 4-14 who's parent's work as migrant workers at DuRussell Potato Farm in Manchester, MI.
